Kaylee was underneath Serenity's engines working on a few leaks that she had noticed on their last planet-side stop. She had picked up the supplies that they needed and got to work straight-away. She was definately long over due for a break, but she always loved working on Serenity so she continued to work, although, she had not had any quality time with the crew especially Simon or River.
A few hours had gone by and she was getting rather hungry. So, she scooted out from underneath and headed towards the galley. She made herself a quick sandwich along with a few sliced strawberries and headed back to the engine room. There, she climbed into her hammock and just relaxed, listening to the roar of Serenity's engines...a sound she loved to hear.

It always seemed to Simon that he had more free time on his hands than anyone else on Serenity. Of course he had work to do in the Infirmary; making sure the stores were as complete as was possible (although restocking it was more of an issue when they were headed for the outer planets, since they had no medical supplies to speak of themselves, let alone to sell) and that he’d remembered to put everything back where it belonged, since everything had its place. It irked Simon dreadfully when people came in here without asking him first, and rummaged through drawers and boxes until they found whatever it was they were looking for, whether that was a sticking plaster or some kind of medicine; this was his domain, his personal space, and besides, he knew where everything was. There was no need for them to fumble through everything if he was around.
However, once all that was done, as long as they were in the air and no-one managed to hurt themselves, Simon was pretty much at a loose end. Of course, there were always people to talk to, whether that was one of the rest of the crew or one of the passengers that they had recently taken on, and sometimes he actually got to spend some time with Kaylee, if she wasn’t working (for hers seemed to be a far more full-time job than his), but it seemed that he spent a lot of time doing absolutely nothing. Once they were planet side, it was a different story, with most of the jobs needing all hands on deck, but they were far from any planet, moon or little piece of rock right now. And Simon had run out of things to do. Sure, he could have reorganised something in the infirmary, but he’d done that only last week and it wasn’t the most interesting job in the world. As much as he loved being in the air, he hoped that they were headed for a planet soon. Any planet would do.
Deciding that he’d go and seek out a decent conversation with someone, Simon headed first for the engine room. Kaylee was guaranteed to be there, but whether he’d be able to hear her if she was hidden round some hidden part of Serenity’s inner workings was another matter entirely. Maybe he’d strike lucky, and she’d be taking a break, or doing something that didn’t involve shouting just to get yourself heard. “Hey, Kaylee,” he said, poking his head round the door to see that it was his lucky day; she was resting, and therefore she’d probably be able to talk to him without getting behind on whatever highly technical thing it was she was doing. “What’re you up to? And…are those strawberries?”

Kaylee, who had been relaxing and finding herself nodding off here and now, was glad she finally had forced herself to slow down and take a breather. For her, it was always work, work, work and hardly no play anymore. As she just laid there in her hammock, eating her delcious strawberries, she was paying no attention to any voices around her. She was so into the strawberries and listening to Serenity and of course thinking of a certain doctor that she heard nothing else.
A few minutes went by and she heard a faint sound of someone speaking. She sat up and turned her head to see it was Simon. Smiling brightly as usual she swung her legs over the edge of the hammock. "Hey Simon," she replied as she purposely made room for him. She was very happy to see him and was lucky that he wasn't busy with anything. "Me? Well, I actually forced myself to take a break awhile. And yes, of course these are strawberries...no other fruit in the 'verse could I put over strawberries. How are you doin'?"

Simon had to admit, he was tempted by the strawberries that Kaylee had. Where she’d got them, he didn’t know, but after months of protein meals aside from when they were planet-side, fresh fruit was a welcome luxury. It was funny, the things that he missed while flying. He still missed Osiris to some extent, but Serenity was his home, and it was the smaller things that he longed for; fresh fruit, a busy and challenging work schedule, new clothes…things that were hard to get when you were always on the move. At least he felt happier going off-ship now that he and River weren’t so highly wanted by the Alliance. They might not have planned to end up on some ship in the middle of the ‘Verse, but while they were here they might as well take the chance to see some non-Core planets. Anything for a bit of variety.
Simon smiled at Kaylee, pushing up the sleeves of his shirt, as he moved over towards her hammock, for it was hot in the engine room. Sitting down beside her, he kissed her briefly before looking back at the strawberries. He loved to spend time with Kaylee, and though both their jobs were time-consuming and important, as long as there wasn’t any serious crime of some sort planned, it was easy enough to continue a relationship on Serenity. After all, Zoe had managed it for goodness knew how long, and she and Wash would probably have remained married for the future if things had gone differently. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a strawberry,” Simon commented, picking up one of the slices Kaylee had and popping it in his mouth before she could complain. “Still, they’re just as good as I remember. Where did you get them?” He didn’t remember seeing any in the kitchen, but he didn’t tend to look too closely at the food; it was more appetising that way.
“I’m fine,” he continued, in answer to her question. “Bored, but fine.”

Jung was still familiarizing herself with Serenity. She had found her way to through the cargo bay, up to the lounge, and into the galley. She was looking through the supplies, it was fairly rudimentary, protein, tea, and a variety of dried goods. Some of the items were out of date, in fact more than a few. Having strong knowledge of the general lifespan of food, she left what would keep, and disposed of what might do more harm then good.
Jung had not met many of the crew, in fact aside from gaining entry from Captain Reynolds and a brief introduction to Inara she hadn't even seen another soul. She wandered down the corridor towards the engine room, wanting to see the mechanical bits in action. Well, at least from outside the door. She might get a closer look sometime, but the noise would take a little getting used to. Plus, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt something.
She came nearer to the end of the corridor and over the sound of the engine, she head a voice, it was that of a young man's. She couldn't make out what he was saying over the noise, but she was certain she had heard a male speak. Jung could hear that it was not the Captain, intrigued she decided to move closer to the engine room, staying out of sight.
It wasn't that she was one for eavesdropping, in fact she hated eavesdropping, but Jung was shy, and she was in new territory here. She heard a young woman's voice respond to the gentleman, she thought she heard the word strawberries, but she couldn't be sure.
Strawberries? Must be your head wishing, she thought to herself
The male voice answered again. A great part of Jung wanted to step through the doorway and introduce herself, but she was worried. She wasn't sure if the two were going to discuss something private or were trying to remove themselves from the rest of the group while the ship was relatively calm. Serenity was not a large vessel, but Jung was sure most days there was plenty of hustle and bustle going on that kept everyone busy. Jung stepped away from the door, finding comfort enough just in knowing there were indeed others aboard. This ship was her home now, and she'd had quite enough of being home alone. She turned back towards the galley.

Kaylee smiled as Simon had made himself right at home close to her as he sat down on the hammock as well. She was also rather enjoying her strawberries, but gladly shared them with Simon as well. When he kissed her, she felt the warmth of his lips touch hers, a feeling she often loved. It wasn't hard at all for her to have a relationship on Serenity, in fact, she loved it. She had always had a love for Simon since the first day he set foot on Serenity. A few times here and there she would often try to get his attention, but he always seemed oblivious to her motions and so forth. Now, she was enjoying her wonderful relationship with him, even though it took awhile, and loved spending time with him.
"These strawberries came from that drop that we had a few weeks back. And yea, I tend to hoard the strawberries when it comes to getting them. But if you ever want some, and if we have some, I always tend to put them in the last cupboard on the bottom left corner," she replied as she perked her head to the side and towards the doorway as she heard something.
Getting off the hammock slowly, she made her way towards the door and saw a shadow of someone walking away. "Hello? Anyone there," she replied in that sort of manner since she didn't know if it would be the captain or River or someone else.

Simon had never thought that he’d be able to sustain a relationship on board ship. Well, in actuality, he’d not thought that he’d be able to get into a relationship in the first place, let alone keep one going; although he had liked one person in particular on Serenity from almost the moment he’d paid his way as a passenger, he tended to say the wrong thing at the wrong time and end up offending her. It had taken Simon a long time to finally tell Kaylee how much he liked her, but he was glad he had. He couldn’t help the fact that he was all stiff and formal when she talked to him, or that he never managed to say quite what he meant, but he really was glad that they’d got past that. Of course, he still managed to put his foot in it every now and again, but it was becoming less frequent. At least, he hoped it was. Maybe people were just noticing it less.
Words had never been Simon’s forte. It wasn’t that he disliked speaking, because it was something he could do quite well, if he was talking about a subject that he was knowledgeable on. However, when it came to talking to people, things just came out wrong, without him even meaning it. They never sounded wrong in his head, but when he spoke…that was when things messed up. Still, it didn’t matter anymore; he and Kaylee were…well, they were seeing each other (in the sense that they were what was classed as an item as opposed to actually seeing each other with their eyes, which was something that happened all the time…wo de tian a. This was what he meant by words running away with each other, despite not actually having said anything yet) as was shown by the way he was sitting on her hammock, eating her strawberries. They were nice strawberries too; he’d have to make sure that he got some before they all got eaten.
“I’ll have to make sure that I manage to get some before someone else makes off with them, then,” he replied, trailing off slightly as Kaylee got up. Was he interrupting her work? Should he go? He relaxed, however, when he realised that she’d just noticed someone outside the door. It was unusual for people not to walk straight into a room though, so he got up too, in time to see someone turning away, but not quick enough to see who they were. “Hello?” he said, echoing Kaylee.
Chinese;; Wo de tian a – oh God

Even with her back turned toward the engine room Jung distinctly heard the young woman's voice query:
"Hello? Anyone there?"
It wasn't long before the young man's voice said: "Hello?"
Wo de tian. They heard her.
Alright, two choices: meet them, or run away.
Slowly, Jung turned around, popping her head cautiously around the corner of the entrance to the engine room. There was a young woman with brown hair and slight smudges of grease on her face. A smile errupted on her face at the sight of Jung. The young man had brown hair as well, but his was a darker, richer color, his eyes were a bright blue. In contrast to the girl, he was rather clean. He was not smiling, but he looked friendly in a more reserved and slightly wary way.
"Hi...sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I... I'm just new to the ship and I was exploring... I heard your voices, I didn't want to interrupt..."
Feeling a bit more comfortable, though not completely, Jung moved to be in full view of the young man and woman,
"I'm the new cook and tailor, my name is Jung Shin Brayden."

Kaylee, who always loved meeting new people, smiled, "Hi. Welcome onboard Serenity. I am Kaylee, Serenity's mechanic. And this is Simon, he is the ships doctor." She moved towards Jung to greet the young woman with a friendly handshake. Deep down she wished that her and Simon hadn't been interrupted but in all the same, she was glad to meet the new shipmate.

One of the more interesting things about living on a ship was that Simon always seemed to be meeting new people, most of whom came from walks of life that he would never had had contact with while on Osiris; his family had been the upper-class, the moneyed folk, and these people didn’t fall into that class. Not that they weren’t good people; far from it. As it hard turned out, many of the people that he had encountered while on Serenity had been far more intriguing and had had far more colourful personalities (as well as language) than any of the people he’d previously socialised with. Still, he did sometimes wish that they might encounter another doctor with whom he could have a technical discussion, or at least someone who was a little more educated. It was why he liked to talk to Inara occasionally, and he was also hoping that one of the new passengers they had taken on might be from somewhere other than the Rim.
Still, the crew were the best family Simon had ever had, and though he might not have been able to have such an intellectual discussion with any of them (the way they fell silent when he mentioned Earth-That-Was and then changed the subject was a clear indicator that they weren’t especially interested), he still didn’t think that he’d want to change them for the all the worlds in the ‘Verse. Even the passengers were alright, as long as they didn’t turn out to be moles (Mal seemed to have instigated a far more stringent inspection of potential passengers since that episode); therefore, although Simon was disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to spend some much needed quality time with Kaylee, he wasn’t too upset at meeting this new passenger – Jung.
“Hello,” Simon repeated, as Kaylee introduced him to Jung. “A cook? Maybe we’ll be able to eat something other than processed protein for a change.”
