The Core
Full Name: Montgomery Walters
Nickname(s): Monty, Sasquach
Birthday: November 12, 2462
Age: 56
Origin: Shadow
Location: Teresa (his ship)
Allegiance: Independents
Occupation: Captain, smuggler
The Appearance
Eye Color: Blue/gray
Hair Color: Brown
Height && Weight: 6' 4”, 220 pounds
General Description: Monty has been described by many of his friends as a sasquatch. He certainly fits the name. A mountain of a man, Monty used to have a great mass of brown hair on both his head and face. He temporarily shaved off his infamous “soup-catcher” to please his wife “Bridget,” but grew it back after her learned of her betrayal. He now sports
a full sized beard once again, but that does not change the fact that some of the hair on top of his head has gone away, and is never coming back.
Despite Monty’s friendly face, there is something about him that speaks of strength, like that of a sleepy bear—amiable, friendly, but willing to bat your head off if you threaten him. Although he generally keeps his hair as straight as he can, the sheer abundance and frizziness of it occasionally makes it appear more tangled than it actually is.
In addition to being quite tall, Monty is also rather large laterally. While even he will not deny that he has put on weight since his days in the Unification War, only some of this is not fat. There is a solid wall of muscle underneath Monty's jovial exterior, and it has played no small part in helping to attain a reputation as a fierce brawler. Most people who see Monty do not expect him to be a good fighter, but avoid him anyway due to his size. Those who do not generally learn quickly.
Monty moves like a rolling boulder, not stopping until he gets where he wants and barely noticing any obstacles in his way. The way he moves, combined with the air of authority he is still retains from his day sin the war, has the effect of making him seem larger
than he is (which is already a considerable size.) Monty is aware of how intimidating his size can be, and sometimes uses it as a tool when negotiating prices for smuggled goods. He never goes so far to threaten his customers, though. That is considered bad form, and tends to lose you your customers and start fights. Not that Monty has any problem with fights. They just don’t tend to get the bills paid.
Monty tends to not put too much stock in what people wear. It is not too uncommon to see him wearing something stained with food, oil, or something else that does not bear thinking about. Fortunately for him, most of the 'business' meetings he attends don't require much decorum. He generally wears brown colors out of unconscious habit formed during the war.
He will occasionally wear brown coats, though not his old army uniform. That is in the back of his closet, buried behind nostalgia and old neckties. His clothes are all both comfortable and practical, and without any unnecessary frivolities. He has some nicer jackets and suits for special occasions (such as his wedding,) but they spend most of their time in the back of his closet, collecting dust.
The Personality
Likes && Dislikes: Monty's love for food can be readily seen simply by looking at him. He is a huge man, and people simply do not get that big without having a powerful fondness for eating. Monty has this fondness in spades. Nothing cheers him up like good, homemade cooking. If it weren't for the face that he does a lot of lifting and such in his smuggling business, he would probably have gotten so fat by now that he wouldn't be able to get up from the dinner table.
Though he does believe in certain creature comforts, that's not all there is to Monty. He has a deeper, more artistic side. He enjoys good music, mostly what would be called Western. He likes to sometimes tell stories, usually around a campfire. Of course, there aren't many fires on the ship, so this generally has to wait until the crew is on the planet and has a reason to sleep outside. If this happens and the mission is safe enough, the few crew members who have children will bring them to flock around Monty for a good story, usually about the Unification War.
Monty enjoys spending time with children, whether telling stories or doing something else entirely. One of the things he hates more than anything else is bullies, or anyone who treats a child badly. In his opinion, there is a place where men like that belong. It's a couple of feet under the ground. Bullies in general meet Monty's scorn as well, though his hatred is reserved for those who target those much smaller and weaker than themselves.
Despite his reputation as a brawler, Monty is a very friendly person. He dislikes arguments of almost any kind, and gets along with almost everyone he meets. He has fun in fights once they've started, but he never goes looking for them. He would much rather everyone just got along, but he's lived long enough to know that some things just aren't going to happen any time soon.
Interests && Hobbies: Monty likes music, but something needs to be made clear—there is an enormous difference between liking music and being good at making music. Monty can carry a tune to an extent, but he's rarely asked to sing at parties. Over the years he has tried to pick up a few instruments, but has never had much success. He finally settled on the
fiddle, and can play a few tunes on it. Nothing fancy, but enough to get through some old folk songs. Some of the songs he can actually sing well are old soldier songs—his booming voice was perfect for carrying the tune across the battlefield. However, there are too many memories associated with those songs for him to want to sing them regularly.
Monty has never been much for reading, but he has occasionally been known to pick up a book or two. If he can actually stay with the book for more than a few chapters, he'll usually finish it. Intellectual essays or overly wordy authors don't hold much water with him, but he appreciates a good story. Any sort of scholarly debate about a book would go straight over his head, but that doesn't really matter to him. He just appreciates the story, and doesn't care about the 'symbolism' or 'foreshadowing.'
If Monty isn't in the kitchen or chumming around with his crew, you can usually find him in the engine room of his ship. He knows enough not to get in the engineers' way, and likes to keep an eye on things. He knows a bit about mechanics, and has always been a bit interested in how the engines that drive his ship work. However, he's never had the patience to actually learn the engineering involved. He doesn't think the field would really suit him, he would much rather be out doing things than inside, fixing them.
Strengths: Monty is physically strong from hauling his crates of smuggled goods all over his ship. He hasn't got the raw muscle of a bodybuilder or an athlete, but he knows how to use the muscle he does have...particularly in fights. Fighting is definitely one of his strengths. As Zoey said, if Monty got into a fight with Mal, they would 'be in the dirt right
about now, scooping up Mal's teeth.' He has been in more than one barroom fight in his life, and going through a war is enough to teach you a few things about fighting. Monty is normally a really nice person, but he enjoys fights once he gets into them, and those who see him fight will be exposed to a completely new side of him.
One thing can be said for Monty: though he is not the brightest bulb on the tree, he certainly is a good captain. He knows who needs to be doing what, and (more importantly) knows how to get them to do it. He is always in command of his ship, and no one questions him. He doesn't rule through fear or coercion like some other captains, but rather has earned the respect of his men. He knows enough about everything that goes on in his ship to give an informed decision, and if one of his crew members knows better than him, Monty has no problem admitting it. He is humble enough to be a good leader. He also has a certain charisma about him that not only endears him to his men, but tends to help him make good friends.
One of the biggest assets that Monty has is his vast communications network. Throughout his years of smuggling, Monty has gotten to know a lot of people. His good memory for names and faces combined with his friendly nature has gotten him a lot of friends in both high and low places. People tend to remember Monty, and it has come in handy more than once in a sticky situation. No matter what he needs, Monty generally knows someone who can provide it.
Weaknesses: Bridget was able to see right through one of Monty's biggest weaknesses—women. Monty has a soft spot for women, and tends to stop thinking when they become involved. This could be said of any man to some extent, but this selective loss of thought is
much more pronounced in Monty than in the average person. He has not been terribly close to many women in his life, but the ones he has been close to he has been very passionate about. He tends to turn a blind eye on the flaws of those he loves, and it takes a quite rude awakening—such as the meeting between Bridget and Mal—to bring him back to his senses.
Planning is not one of Monty's strong suits. It isn't that Monty is stupid, it's just that he does not always think things through. He knows the basics of smuggling and how to handle a job, but there are times when he simply does not consider the consequences of what he is going to do. Usually someone he trusts in his crew will notice any mistakes Monty doesn't pick
up, so it is not too much of a problem. What he lacks in planning he makes up for in experience and connections. Still, it is this lack of strategical thinking that will put many of the more complex heists forever out of Monty's reach.
Although he is not an alcoholic, alcohol can definitely be said to be one of Monty's weaknesses. When he gets drunk most of Monty's common sense goes flying out of the window—and unconscious people begin to follow them soon after. He loses self control, and
though he'll never go so far as to hit a friend—it would take a lot more than alcohol to get him to do that—he does tend to lose track of when to stop hitting his enemies. Most of Monty's crew knows better than to let him get near too much alcohol by now, but accidents still do happen.
Secrets: Monty once had a small crush on Zoe. He saw her in action with Mal during the war, and an attraction (that is presumed to be one-sided) developed. Monty is sometimes shy around women, however, and never got around to expressing his feelings. Also, he always had a suspicion that there was something between Mal and Zoe, and did not want to risk hurting one of his best friends. By the time he discovered that their relationship was truly platonic, the war was over and they were all too changed to think about something like starting a relationship. Not that Monty thinks the thought ever crossed Zoe’s mind.
Overall Personality: Monty can definitely said to be a bit rough around the edges. Put in a fancy ballroom or business meeting he would stick out like an enormous, six foot four, sore thumb. Growing up on a planet mostly dedicated to farming did nothing to improve his manners, and combining that with his lack of formal education makes for what many people would classify as the stereotypical redneck. However, there is more to Monty than meets the eye, though you must look past his enormous exterior to find it.
Monty places enormous value on his family, friends, and crew. He experienced first hand what it was like to lose his brothers during the Unification War, in both the literal sense when his brothers died, and the figurative sense when fellow soldiers were dying around him. One of the surest ways to get Monty angry is to tangle with one of his crewmen. He does not see his mother or sister very often, but he is fiercely protective of them as well. When he is around any of these people he is one of the friendliest men you will ever meet, and is very kind. However, this can change in a heartbeat if anything happens to threaten them.
When Monty gets into a fight it is like a whole new man emerges. Those who know the man well would never expect such a kind soul to be so fierce, but something inside him simply breaks down when he really gets going. His total lack of fear, combined with his enormous size and military experience, make him a formidable foe. Usually when he gets into a fight Monty isn't really angry, he's more 'riled up.' It is very difficult to truly make him angry. When he does get truly angry, bad things tend to happen.
Despite his flaws, there is an air of command about Monty that holds his crew together. Everyone knows he isn’t the smartest captain, or the richest, but they know that he will do everything he possibly can to keep his crew safe. He never wavers in the face of a threat, but does not push to the point of recklessness. When he enters into a battle, he always keeps his head. If he did not have this trait, he would never have made it through the war.
The Family
Parents && Siblings: Rosanne and Samson Walters were his mother and father. He had an older brothers (Gregory) and a younger sister (Teresa).
Character History: Monty was born on the fairly rustic planet of Shadow to a farming family. His mother had come from one of the more 'civilized' planets on a vacation, but fell in love when she met his father. She adjusted well to farm life, but still held on to some of her more urban notions—such as what an appropriate name for a young boy is. Montgomery was given his mouthful of a name as his mother's way of paying respects to some distance uncle. Monty quickly came to use only his nickname, and everyone around him learned to do so fairly quickly as well. He grew on the farm, working and playing with his brother while doting on his younger sister. It became obvious how big he was going to be when he was young, and he was the tallest member of his family by the time he was fifteen.
The Reynolds family lived in the same area of the planet as the Montgomery's farm, but the two families had little interaction. At least, not until the Unification War came rolling around. Montgomery's mother was never exactly a supporter of the independence movement, but the rest of the family was gung-ho towards the idea. Monty was right behind his older brothers and father in enlisting in the Browncoat Army. It was there that he met Malcolm Reynolds, who was in the same Company as him for a while.
Monty fought hard in the war but soon realized that things were not going as nicely as they had seemed when talking about them around the family fireplace. Things were real bad, and likely to get worse. He managed to get word home to his mother and sister before Shadow was bombed, and they relocated safely to Persephone. Those two were safe from the war. His brother and father weren't so lucky. The two of them were in the Battle of Serenity Valley, and none survived.
Monty himself was not in Serenity Valley, but was instead in space quite some ways away. Early on in the war he showed how useful he was in command of a ship, and soon he found himself in charge of his own battleship. He saw a fair share of action on the ground as well, but most of his contributions were in the sky. He was never one to make the strategies for the battles, but he knew how to handle a ship—in the end, though, even that wasn't enough.
After the war, Monty was at a loss. Half of his family was dead, and his mother and sister were living happily on Persephone. He didn't feel at home there, though. Eventually, he found Malcolm Reynolds again, a man even more shattered by the war than he was. The two had an adventure or two that somehow led to smuggling, and suddenly Monty had found his calling. He got off to a rough start, and even got caught a few times—once at Beylix, for making the key mistake of forgetting to never bring two ships together in the middle of nowhere. It looks mighty suspicious. He started off slowly and stayed under the Alliance's radar as much as possible. After a while he had accumulated enough money to buy himself a ship. He did, and it was a nice one—much larger than Serenity, big enough for some serious hauling. Monty has learned all the tricks of the trade, and has contacts on all sorts of planets.
For a while, Monty thought that he had fallen in love—a dangerous thing to think, for any man. He married a woman he knew as Bridget, but soon learned the truth from his old friend Mal. Bridget was a con artist, a thief, and a liar who had convinced him to shave off his pride and joy...his beard. Needless to say, the two soon parted ways. Since then, Monty has returned to smuggling and has grown his beard back. There is still a soft spot in his heart for Bridget, but he is more or less over her.
When Monty first heard the broadcasts about how the Alliance had created the Reavers, he was reluctant to believe it. However, he soon heard from various sources that not only was it true, but one of his best friends in the ‘Verse—Malcolm Reynolds—had been the one responsible for revealing the truth. And that he had nearly died from it. When he realized that it was the truth, and that the Alliance was responsible for all the deaths and tortures committed by the Reavers, it stirred up some old flames inside Monty that he thought had died along with the Browncoat Army.
With all of his contacts, it would be almost impossible for Monty not to hear the rumors of another war starting. Monty remembers all to well the costs of the last war, but he is still definitely a Browncoat at heart. He knows what side he'll be fighting for if another war rolls around.
The Edge
Something Unique: Monty is actually on decent terms with the Alliance. While what he does is usually illegal, there are always those in government who will have need for jobs to be completed with....discretion. Monty has established contacts in the Alliance, and sometimes the police are told not to look for him as hard as they should. He is still a Browncoat at heart, but that doesn't mean he has to intentionally alienate himself from the Alliance.
Role Playing Sample: The slight bump that went through the Teresa had, over the years, become expected, almost comfortable. It barely even phased Monty as he walked down the slightly small corridor of his ship. Granted, his considerable weight left him more firmly planted on the ground than some, but this stability came mostly from the fact that he knew his ship well. There was hardly a tremor or quirk that he had not come to know and love over the past few years, and the odd creaks and groans some parts of the ship would make during takeoff had become like music to his ears. Of course, most takeoffs did not take place immediately after Monty learned that his wife was actually a con woman.
An angry look was plastered across Monty's generally cheerful face, all too visible in the empty space that his beard has once occupied. That she-devil! He could not stop thinking about her betrayal. His wife! That harpy! That foul, no good jian huo! The few crewmen who were not busy at their stations and were roaming the hallways cleared out of his way as they saw him coming. He made his way to the kitchen and went straight for the fridge, ignoring the questions of one of the women who was in there. He pulled out two bottles of champagne left over from his wedding, and immediately strode to his bunk.
Once inside, he sat down on his bed and leaned against the wall. He took a long quaff of the liquor before setting it down despondently. Maybe getting drunk was not the best idea right now. He realized as he sat that he was not really feeling angry at the moment....more sad, really. Sure, he was angry at Bridget—or whatever her name really was—but he had loved her. Or, at least, he thought he did. And he had thought that she loved him. He took another sip of the champagne, no longer trying to get drunk but rather thinking about Bridget.
How long had it all been an act? From the very beginning? He had met her on some lonely moon with hardly a town to its name, he couldn't imagine that she would have been there just to wait for a ship to come by whose captain she could seduce. Maybe...maybe it started as real, and then became a lie. Would that be better? Monty had to ask himself, in one of his rare moments of insight. No, he eventually decided. That devil-woman had never really loved him. And since he had never known the real Bridget, he had probably never really loved her either.
He sighed and set aside the champagne bottle, now empty. He did not reach for the second one, though. He was quite tipsy enough as it was. He idly stroked the bare space on his chin where his soup catcher had once proudly stood. There was one benefit to being a bachelor again, at least. He could grow his beard back. That was always something.
