Stonehearth
In 1955, a team of American archaeologists discovered a small, undisturbed tomb deep in the Amazon Rainforest. The tomb was the final resting place of two perfectly preserved bodies of unidentifiable race. They were called “the twins”--Tica, the female, and Yuca, the male. They were proclaimed to be the most profound arachaeological find of the decade.
Upon examining these bodies, scientists dicovered there were unique properties about their DNA. Animal testing revealed that DNA from the female caused mental mutations in rats, rabbits, and dogs. DNA from the male caused more overt, physical mutations. Some of these mutations were fatal and disgusting. But some of them were not.
In 1960, the government moved Tica and Yuca to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, and began to set up a grounds for human testing. The scientists there decided the tiny, semi-industrial town of Cross Plains would be perfect for what they needed, and chose an orphanage- Cross Plains Home for Children – with plenty of subjects to inject their DNA samples into. Half of the children at Cross Plains Home for Children were given DNA from Tica, and half from Yuca.
The scientists watched in fascination as children began to develop the same kinds of mutations as the animals had. Over the years, as the children grew into adults, their powers began to develop into something beyond even what the scientists dreamed. Meanwhile, strange rumors began to grow in the town, ghost stories about the old orphanage and how the students there were being affected in strange, maybe even evil ways.
Nearly fifty years later, the Cross Plains Home for Children has been abandoned, but a new orphanage has been erected on the outskirts of town, called Stonehearth. Unknown to the children, a second round of testing is being undergone at Stonehearth.
Most of the old orphans have moved away, but some of them remain, and have produced children, who have proven to be possessed of even stronger powers than their parents. Unease is brewing amongst the regular townspeople, some of whom believe that these strange outcasts must be affected by some dark supernatural power.
The mutants and the rest of the citizens of Cross Plains existed in a state of cold resentment, neither side moving to strike against the other, until a pair of young, strange, and terrifying people swept into the town, openly using their strange powers and stirring the townspeople to strike. A mere week ago, the body of a young boy, rumored to have been one of the strange, "witch" children, was found beaten and bloody on the fairgrounds.
A war is brewing. Both sides are itching for a fight - the mutants, aching for vengeance against the boy's murderers, and the most superstitious of the townspeople, eager to continue their witch-hunt.
Which side will you be on, or will you be caught in the middle?
