The Core.
Full Name: Zoe Alleyne Washburn
Nickname(s): Zoe
Birthday: October 30, 2480
Age: 33
Origin: Santo (actually born on-board a ship called the Holman)
Location: Serenity
Allegiance: Browncoats/Independents
Occupation: First Mate
The Appearance.
Eye Color: Dark brown (warmish hue)
Hair Color: Mid back when curly, nearly waist length wet. Dark brown highlighted with caramel.
Height && Weight: 5’10 150#
General Description: Of Cuban descent, Zoe is tall, standing at 5'10" and 150# of solid muscle. Her posture is usually straight but not rigid, and her standard facial expression reflects the same no-nonsense sensibility. Personally, she believes that she looks as if she were put together by committee. Her eyes are too big, as are her lips, and in her opinion, the whole is marginally attractive, but she rarely thinks about it. If her looks will get her what she needs/wants, she will exploit them, if not, she ignores them. She was raised by level-headed older parents who asserted to her that such things are wholly unimportant and required her to develop independence and personality over her physical attractiveness.
Her clothing is neat, tidy, casual and comfortable, well-fitted, and often involves some kind of light armor. She favors neutral, earthy or jewel tones in greyed hues. She usually appears feminine but no-nonsense at the same time. Most of the time off the ship she carries her pistol strapped to her right hip.
Hair: Her long spiral curls seem to flow effortlessly over her shoulders, but really she spends quite a bit of time making certain that they are well cared-for. She picked up this habit after meeting Wash. He used to love running his fingers through them and made a fuss over them the first time he was allowed to touch her. Zoe picked up on this and began making a concerted effort for him. Now that her husband has died, she continues in respect of his memory.
Skin: Honey-colored and smooth, most of Zoe's skin is not that of the warrior she is. She credits good genes, for she certainly hasn't spent much time on it. Her hands are quite rough from years of hard work.
Eyes: Zoe has always been told how beautiful her eyes are, mostly by her parents' friends and older people. She suspects she has what one would call "Classic good looks," the sort which appeal to those 30-40 years older than she.
The Personality.
Likes && Dislikes: True to her level-headed appearance, Zoe likes balance. She likes order, to an extent. However, on the flip side, Zoe has no trouble with chaos either.
Chaos is just an opportunity to take charge, and Zoe has no problem with that. A strong and formidable woman, Zoe likes to be in command of a situation, though she also has no trouble taking orders, like the soldier she is trained to be.
Zoe also developed a fondness for children, strangely enough in the days following Serenity Valley. There were plenty of children in the local villages who had lost one or both of their parents, and Zoe in particular took it upon herself to help find food for these kids. Even when in the midst of adversity, Zoe likes to do the "right thing."
Along with that, she finds it very rewarding to take after someone who has wronged others. One of the main reasons she joined up with the Independents was her feeling that the Alliance was wrong and had done her wrong, both personally and politically.
She very much dislikes an abundance of technology. Sure, if it will make her life easier, she will handle high tech tools, but give her the old-fashioned pistol versus a high tech laser gun just about any day. They work better, jam less, and never run out of batteries.
Interests && Hobbies: When she was in school, Zoe did quite a bit of horseback riding. These days, she uses horseback largely as a way to get around on some of the more backwater planets, but she does still enjoy it. If she had more time planetside, it's something she'd like to take up again.
One thing which surprised Zoe greatly was her nurturing side. Having been a soldier for most of her life, she never thought she would be able to get excited by simple things. She was wrong. As she and Wash began to get closer to one another, she found that it was fun to do little things for him and with him. She always had his back and she learned to cook, simply to please him. It still isn't something she excels at, but she learned to do a little something, make a few recipes well, which made her husband very happy. In addition, Zoe and Wash have discussed (or perhaps argued) about having a child. Zoe very much wanted to make their family more complete and a child, she felt, would do that. She cannot wait to meet her son or daughter, she has said.
Strengths: All around, Zoe is a strong woman. Physically, emotionally, and in just about every way, she is a force to be reckoned with. She is intelligent and usually thinks a situation through quickly and thoroughly before acting. She is a strong soldier, capable of stealth, speed, and strength on the battlefield.
Augmenting her physical strength, she is a kind person as well, capable of great love and compassion. When River is upset, Zoe is right there, trying to calm her. She has a solid sense of her own morality and will only kill if she feels it must be done. She does not relish the job. To that end, she is largely merciful. She will kill quickly and as painlessly as possible. There is no honor in making your enemy suffer.
Weaknesses: Her one weakness is one of her former strengths. Zoe was well aware that Wash could die in the line of their duty, but as she's said before "I ain't so afraid of losin' a thing that I won't try to have it." So she chose to love Wash, chose to lead her life in a dangerous way and she lost the man she loved. He as now become her greatest weakness. The soldier in her can push thoughts of him aside whenever she needs to be effective, but in the quiet moments, when she's on her own, she often gives in to her morose mood and from time to time will cry over her loss as any wife would. It has also made her a different soldier to some extent. She feels a bit more for her quarry's families, since she has lost her own. That is not to say that she is slower or less efficient about dealing out death when she needs to be, but once the job is done, it does not go away quite so quickly for her.
Another weakness is for small things, helpless things. It is perhaps an extension of her maternal instinct, but she feels responsible to protect those who are less capable than she. This mostly applies to her crew, who she feels is her extended family, but also extends to any innocent creature in need of protecting.
Secrets: Zoe is not one to volunteer too much personal information, but that does not mean that she is harboring deep and emotional secrets. Largely she is a plain-spoken person, honest and insightful, and she prefers to be dealt with in the same way.
Overall Personality: Levelheaded and thoughtful, Zoe is usually the of the "look before you leap" school of thought. She will often deliberate and weigh all options before she acts, which is one reason she and Mal worked so well together for as many years as they did. She tempered his more impulsive nature and forced him to think things through at least a bit before he jumped into a foolish plan. With all that said, she definitely has it within her personality to commit wholeheartedly to a plan of action even if she feels it is entirely foolhardy. Again, a reason she and Mal got along so well for so long.
As a career soldier, it is second nature to her to follow orders and maintain formality, all of which she has continued, though her tour of duty has long since ended. Zoe would never question an order from Mal in the moment, as he is her superior, but she will most certainly question him after the fact, as he is also a friend. She is the only one on the crew who consistently refers to Mal as "sir," and she is also the only one whose loyalty he never questions. Though Wash often got jealous of their relationship, she never had even the slightest interest in a romantic relationship with Mal. He was too close to a brother as far as she was concerned.
The Family.
Parents && Siblings: Constance Alleyne(deceased at age 64, complications of a mutated strain of the flu)
Ransford Alleyne(deceased at age 57, shuttle explosion)
Character History: Zoe Alleyne was born to Constance and Ransford Alleyne, a pair of diplomats from Santo. She was born on a ship, the Holman and she spent almost her entire childhood shuttling from one border planet to another. This accounts for her complete and total confidence aboard a ship, as well as her ability to adapt quickly to new environments, both qualities of a successful soldier. Young Zoe was also an accomplished student. She took after Ransford and excelled at math, science, and Physical Ed. She began playing sports at the age of eleven, but though she loved it, she never chose to pursue it seriously.
When she was eighteen, she followed her parents' advice and went away to an Alliance officer's academy. At the time, she and her parents believed wholeheartedly in the Alliance and what they were trying to do. Zoe lasted a grand total of two months at the Academy. She took off with a few friends on what was supposed to be a quick trip to a nearby moon, just a weekend's party trip, and got a communication that her father had died, killed "in an accident" aboard his shuttle after a meeting where he refused to toe the Alliance's party line. Zoe at first believed that it was an accident, but as she learned more and more of the details, she began to understand that her father's death was not so easily explained. She went back to Santo, her homeworld which she hardly remembered, and helped her mother to bury her father. Physically helped. It was custom on that world to bury one's loved ones with your own hands.
Without much rudder and craving discipline, Zoe went back to school, learning all about the Alliance and its designs to make the ‘Verse a better place. She bought into it all, loving the way everything seemed to be organized and categorized. And she believed, at the time, that things could easily be improved upon. She wanted to be one who made a difference for people. At the time, it seemed that the Alliance was the way to go about that.
Once she graduated, Zoe set out to explore the world beyond the border planets. There were dozens of ways she could do this, but she chose to join up with a small group of kids her own age who had put together a ragged ship of their own. On Persephone at the age of twenty three, she met Joachin Nichols, an old cohort of her father's who, upon learning who she was, told her his theory that Ransford had been assassinated. After many late night talks with him, Zoe began to believe. His theories put a lot of the pieces together for Zoe, and when she heard of the formation of an Independent army against the Alliance, she changed sides. She was more than happy to join any group which would subvert the organization which had killed her father.
While in the army, Zoe met Mal Reynolds and the two clicked almost instantly. His proclivity towards passion and outright foolishness complemented Zoe's cooler headed approach and they became fast friends and partners. Once the Independents lost Serenity Valley, she agreed to be first mate on Mal's new ship the Serenity.
Not long after that, she met her future husband. When she first met him, Hoban Washburn was a nervous little geek of a man who talked fast and slick to hide his insecurities. This drove Zoe nearly insane and she begged Mal not to hire him on the grounds that she just “didn’t like him.” She assumed, from his frenetic behavior, that he was lying about his expertise and would likely get the lot of them killed. As Wash, as he was called, settled into his new gig, he relaxed and proved to be as much an expert as his references claimed. He also began to show Zoe something that interested her more than his skills as a pilot: a sweet heart, a sense of humor and a quirky, fun, childlike personality. The two of them married six months into their courtship with Mal and Kaylee the only attendants.
The Edge.
Something Unique: Zoe is largely just a woman, but she is also a creature of great balance. She feels at home in many situations, both on the battlefield and in the bedroom. Zoe is not only a warrior, but also a wife and a nurturer. To me, this makes her a fascinating dichotomy, but also a fully-rounded person.
Role Playing Sample:
She didn't know if she'd done right, asking Mal to drop her off on Persephone, but Zoe was having a hard time looking at the familiar walls of Serenity these days. Everything there, from the instrument panel where Wash had breathed his last, to the candle wax stain on their cabin's floor reminded her of what she'd had, what she'd lost, and she had to get out of there. Zoe was not prone to melancholy. She'd seen dozens of men die and she told herself that Wash was no different from any of them. Except that he was. Maybe she'd go back someday, once the pain had worn off, but for now, she chose to ignore it.
Pulling herself together, Zoe climbed out of bed, padding over to the sink in the small apartment which had been home for the past couple of weeks. It was a little more than a dorm room, a little less than an apartment. Just somewhere with a bed and a shower until she sorted herself out. Cupping her hands, she caught some of the stream of cool water, splashing it on her face. A job, that was today's focus. Even if she didn't find one, focus was what she needed more than anything else. Focus had always calmed her. She glanced up at the cracked mirror above the sink, sighing at her reflection. She needed a job, certainly. But right now, what she needed was clothes.
She stepped out of her apartment and went to one of the touchscreens in the grungy lobby. A job, that was her focus. She scrolled through the ads, none looking real promising. Several pages in, one seemed to jump out. She took note of the name of the bar and left the lobby, setting out to find it. Half an hour later, a drink in hand, she was scanning the crowd for someone she didn't know. Her eyes happened upon a man sitting off to one side, as out of the way as he could be. That had to be him. She stood, taking her glass with her, and approached.
"Captain Warranther?" she asked, a clipped formality to her words. "My name is Zoe Washburn, sir. I'd like to speak with you about the posting you made on the Central Computer." Such men could have things to hide and she was careful not to go into specifics aloud in public.
