Full Name: Jung Shin Brayden
Nickname(s): Jung, Shin Jung, Jay
Birthday: Feb 21, 2940
Age: 23
Origin: Ariel City Hospital, Ariel
Location: Persephone
Allegiance: Browncoats/Independents
Occupation: Cook/Tailor/Horse Wrangler
The Appearance.
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Hair Color: Just Shy of Black
Height && Weight: 5'4 and 135
General Description: By the exterior Jung is South Korean. Jung stands only 5’4, but is formidable when angered or defending something she cares for. Jung is not overly concerned with appearance, if there were one area related to appearance that Jung does feel is important it is that she tries to keep her body healthy, if not in prime condition. She keeps a build feminine enough to be pretty, but with enough "softness" to prove she eat as she pleases. Jung possess no diet or specific exercise routine. She eats what she likes and if her work creates a little extra sweat, so be it, but she's not going to spend her days worrying over her weight. She is fond of good food and clean fun, well some where between tarnished and pristine, and those two will trump over image any day.
Jung can be shy at first, but she has a dry sense of humor and quick wit. Jung is also known for her laugh, as it is very genuine. Once she has reached a comfort level look out. Sometimes Jung finds the smallest things amusing, she might get on your nerves a bit, but really, who doesn't? Jung is also one to keep things besides laughter, inside. She doesn't like to trouble people with things she considers suo xi. Sometimes this can turn into trouble as Jung might get all fired up after she's been stirred up enough.
Jung also has a variety of scars, some are due to accidents and others are due to surgery she had to best repair her weakened legs. Being a bit clumsy, Jung has plenty of your standard fall down, tripped up, kind of scars as well. One of her most interesting body traits is the middle finger on her left hand, it is almost always calloused at the first bend because Jung is usually writing. Jung has become a bit more forgetful as she has grown, and is constantly making lists.
Jung is eclectic in her clothing choices, though as she has grown she has found herself choosing bright patterns and vibrant colors. There is never anything too showy, short, and comfort usually overrides all else. She is as average looking in denim or coveralls and an old shirt as she is in a cotton dress. She is pretty, and while you might pick her out in a crowd because she's a bit unique, she's not your fall down gorgeous type. If Jung could describe her body she would say "one size fits all." She has curves where women have curves, but nothing comes in or goes out in a particularly beautiful way.
Generally speaking, because she's now on the move, she has what she needs and if something shiny catches her eye, she might pick it up. However, for now she's about function and usefulness, a few bits of pretty, kept tucked away, of course. She is a modest woman when it comes to her body. Jung is either in boots or flat shoes. She enjoys her vertical shortcoming, why hide it with heels?
The Personality.
Likes && Dislikes: Jung loves life, but in a reserved way. She won't be going about thinking all will turn out well, but she'll work as hard as she has to, to see that things go smoothly. She won't be the one seen as the most optimistic in the group, but she is a far cry from negative. For along time Jung always saw the bright side. Although she tries to remain balanced, at times she becomes excited about things, and her optimism will take a glance around.
In more specific terms, Jung loves horses. They have been a part of her life since she was three. She has a bond with the creatures, not to say she can talk to them, but working with and observing anything for nearly twenty years will gain you some ground.
Jung is also known to form strong bonds with those who treat her well. She was left at Ariel City Hospital. She only knows that her parents were of South Korean origin and that she was not their first child, it was widely gossiped about that her parents abandoned her after they learned of her disability, more on that later. Extended family means a lot to her. Jung likes to be in harmony with the world around her, whether that is a ship or a farm on Harvest, she tries to take in the smallest details of whatever place she is calling home.
One other hobby of note is small space gardening. With a few seed packets and other odds and ends she'll attempt to grown herbs and other plants in the most unusual places. A particular favorite was the time she attempted mint in boxes suspended from the ceiling. it was clear when they were in full bloom as the ventilation system caught the smell and a pleasant odor lingered for weeks.
One of the things Jung dislikes is war. For a long time she appreciated being abandoned at one of the central planets, rather than on a border moon. Therefore, at first she was content to live under the protection of the Alliance. However, as things began to change politically, and the verse changed into something far different, she moved further and further from the central planets. On Harvest she met her husband, Nell Brayden. Nell had been a Browncoat volunteer and was much affected by the war. As word spread about The Message, the potential of war, along with marriage was too much, and not long after their second anniversary the couple separated, informally.
On a smaller scale, Jung doesn't like alcohol, for herself. She finds observing the antics of those who get drunk much more entertaining. So, far be it from her to stop the drinking. Along the same vein Jung is not at all the hands on type. She can be affectionate if she, and she alone chooses. So, sober or drunk be ready for the left if Jung feels her boundaries are being invaded.
Interests && Hobbies: Aside from horses, reading is one of Jung’s hobbies. She has read many genres and is particularly fond of classic literature. The lessons of the past still resonate centuries after they were written.
Jung also enjoys music. In her travels she has encounter many street players and if she enjoys a performance she will offer a bit of coin if she can. Cooking is another of her favorite hobbies, as she loves food, and is open to trying just about any kind of food. Jung is also semi adept with a needle, she can patch up holes, in people or their shirts. She’s not a doctor, but a delicate touch when it comes to stitches might be a nice thing to have.
Strengths: Jung is strong because of the faith she possesses. Not faith in God, she's not sure where she stands on that issue, but faith in those she chooses to trust and call family. She is not the one who will stand with guns blazing, but after those who do are hurt or hungry, Jung will be first in line to help them. She is content with a secondary role, she will not be the one going off for glory, rather the one trying to hold the home front together for the heroes returns. Jung is also bright, which shows through in her wit and diligence to learning as much as she can.
Jung sees the possibility of a brighter future with her husband and for the world. However, she knows the other side to each of those things. What can get better, could also get worse. Jung is also insightful. She can spend hours listening to a person. Often she does not know how to respond, or stumbles over her words, but she’ll listen if someone needs to talk. Perhaps one of Jung's greatest strengths is the ability to know and understand her weaknesses.
Weaknesses: Jung’s greatest weaknesses com from her body. She was born prematurely and despite medical advances, she suffered a lack of oxygen to her brain and parts of it do not function as they should. Her body tends to tire more quickly and she cannot run as quickly or as far as others. At times she cannot understand things until she thinks them through many times.
Another weakness is her lack of desire ask for help. She is stubborn, Nell always said her favorite vehicle ought to have been the mule. Jung is also gun shy. She is leery of all weapons although, she can throw a good punch. Jung has never killed or shot anyone, but she has yet to be in a position to do so.
Secrets:: There are many secrets in Jung’s life, most of them involve her past. She is unsure of whether she would like to uncover the answers. Her family history is another reason she avoids the Alliance and central planets. If she was left on Ariel, it is likely that her family is somewhere near there. While they might be wonderful people, the realistic side of her knows it would probably be best never to run into them, especially if they are Alliance.
As far as her relationship with her husband, they are in contact through the Cortex, often sending waves to one another or actual letters. There relationship in some ways is stronger now than it has ever been, but she is waiting for him to make his choice as to whether or not he wants to remain married. The pair have been separated for six months.
Jung is also slowly losing her sight, she is not sure whether she will lose it completely or not, it is another birth defect. She keeps this to herself and adapts as she can because until she is certain there is no need telling.
Overall Personality:Jung loves those around her more because she knows the time with them could easily be cut short. It is a risk seeking out life on a transport ship, but the adventurer's spirit in her longs to try it at least for a spell. She is witty in an unexpected way. She is the one who will wait patiently for the right moment and zing you or double you over in laughter.
The loyalty she feels to those around her once established is rarely questioned. Though she is not one to fight, she becomes a mother lion protecting her cubs if word is spoken against her "family." Jung is respectful to those who earn it, and especially those who deserve it. She understands the chain of command, but also the tendency of some to exploit power, thus creating the necessity to step in and be assertive. Although she is looks forward to traveling around the 'verse, Jung will be the last to jump ship for a more exciting itinerary.
Ask Jung to speak with you on any subject and she will, and if she doesn't comprehend it, she'll learn what she can so the next time she can be a source of conversation. However, as happy as she'd be to talk about the merits of Greek tragedy, she's just as likely to sit down and talk about the mutated calf at the last sideshow. Everyone's got something to bring to the table, and Jung's happy to have everyone around hers.
The Family.
Parents && Siblings: South Korean origin, has siblings of unknown amount.
Character History : Jung Shin Brayden was born in Ariel City Hospital. She was left there by her parents, most likely because she was born disabled. She was named by the doctors who attended her. Through the social program on Ariel she attended school and did well in her classes. Jung lived in an orphan’s home and was never formally adopted.
At the age of eighteen Jung was first exposed to the Independent movement, it was gaining more momentum. As she became more aware of the world around her and the political changes that had occurred, her distaste for life on Ariel grew. Jung took off to Harvest, being drawn to the name of the world and its distance from the core. She found work on an elderly couple’s farm handling and gentling their horses. She was content there, but just as she thought she'd found her place in the world, the verse slipped another piece into the puzzle.
Just after the turned nineteen she met the man who would become her husband. The two did not court long and married on January 18 of the following year. The aftermath of war and what Nell experienced slowly became too much for him to bear. The pair had worked together to make a life for themselves, but after the release of The Message, and the whispers of another war, Nell needed to be alone, and insisted they divorce. After a day of cooling down, the pair decided instead on separation.
Jung went to Persephone. The world was open to her, but she needed a place to live and having some money would not hurt. Because although Nell was open with their finances, Jung knew there might come a day when she would need to stand alone. And so, just when she felt she was finally home, Jung found herself once again on the drift.
The Edge.
Something Unique: Jung is a woman who thrives on consistency because of the inconsistency of her upbringing. However, for her husband she allows herself to be thrown into a world of gray areas, fear, and uncertainty. She does not believe in the fairy tale, and has no illusions about “perfect love,” but she wants to spend her life for the little moments with her husband. She is happier the behind the scenes, rather than on the front lines. She is much happier making a bed so the gun slinger can rest, or keeping dinner war so the pilot is filled even if some skilled flying caused a missed meal time.
Role Playing Sample: The core represented much of what had nearly destroyed the man I loved. So, I turned to the sky and the black. I began seeking out passage to anywhere, looking at the ships one by one, the destination was not as important as the ship. I ignored the hecklers and meandered down the rows of the Eavesdown Docks. Then I saw it, sitting there, a Firefly class ship, looking exactly like a firefly amongst the great, hulking, ships around it.
I could see the ship was newly repaired and painted. The ship spoke to me, having been through a lot, but becoming stronger for it. I needed a second home and when my eyes fell on the ship, I thought I finally found it. For a while I stared at the ship, not the most mechanically minded, knowing it was a Firefly was about as far as my knowledge went.
Carrying one bag on my back and hope in my heart, I walked onto the ship and stood in the cargo bay. As I looked around I saw I was surrounded by an assortment of things: catwalks, mechanical bits, crates, boxes, and what appeared to be a flask.
“Hello?” I asked the empty space.
“Yes?” a woman’s voice drifted down.
I looked for the source of the voice, but could not see it as there were many shadows on the ship. Squinting a little, I tried, but still saw nothing. And then almost floating to her was a regal woman dressed in a silk skirt, shawl, and blouse. I did not mean to stare, I had seen Companions before, but this woman was imbued with an exotic beauty of body and soul that exuded from her.
“I’m Inara Serra,” the woman began.
“I’m Jung Bradyen, I’m looking to gain passage on this ship.”
“Well, you’ll have to speak to the Captain, he’s on the bridge, I’ll take you.”
“Thank you. Do you know if you’re taking on passengers right now?”
I tried to hide the difficult time she was having with the stairs. This was made all the more difficult by Inara’s very apparent ease and grace in every movement. For a moment I saw Inara’s eye flicker down at her legs, but just as quickly the eyes were looking back at mine.
“I believe we’re only taking on…”
Inara’s voice was interrupted by another, that of a man’s, “Two at the moment, only two.”
“Jung, this is Captain Reynolds,” Inara interjected over his interjection.
“Nice to meet you Captain,” I extended my hand, which the Captain took. He looked me square in the eye, sizing me up, though not judging. I hoped I looked like a proper passenger, but I knew I probably looked tired and run down, but somehow that fact encouraged me. I looked back at the Captain, the coat he wore made me shudder a little inside, remembering Nell.
“This ship’s no place for you if you can’t stand the sight,” the Captain stated.
I wasn’t sure if he meant his own brown coat, or a Brown Coat. Either way my mind was rushing to find the appropriate words. If I could have kicked herself I would have.
Great first impression,
Recomposing, I paused for a moment and began again,
"I'm sorry Captain, it wasn't you, just a memory. And I support the Browncoats, anyway I'd rather not talk about the past now, but if you'd like the story I can share. The ending point being I'd like passage on your ship. I'd like some sky between me and some things."
"I like things to run smooth on my boat, if you've got trouble, especially Alliance, I think we've got our fill for that type."
"Nothing like that Captain, I just need to get away, no one will be coming after me."
At least not after what's happened,
Shaking my head to clear the thought, I began again,
"Captain, I can see by looking at your ship that she's been through her fair share. I don't have much money, but I have a steady enough allowance to be on time with the rent. Ahead of course, for the first bit. I don't poke around where I don't belong and I know how to follow orders. I'm useful in the kitchen and with a needle and thread. I"m also not against pitching in when I can, I'm not much for supremely heavy lifting, but if you've got stock to haul, I've mucked enough stalls in my life to handle that."
